Criticising one’s self.

Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowliness, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails, explore, dream, discover, acquire new friends and gain knowledge of yourself and the world.

Mark Twain.

Theodore Roosevelt said “it is not the critic who counts…”. What’s worse is when you are the critic.

Self criticism could be compared to suicide. Just do it! Photo credit: Google.

You aren’t good in writing, write anyway. I cringe whenever I read my previous posts and end up deleting them. A friend told me that those posts will remind me of how I started, why I started. Progress not perfection. I’m still not a great writer but I know why I write, I know why I started writing, I know why I will keep writing.

Self approval is the opposite of self criticism. Photo credit: Google.

Just do it. Your voice might not be beautiful, sing anyway. You might not be a great dancer, dance anyway. The Word of God has taught me not to despise little beginnings. Do not criticize yourself.

A baby doesn’t stop walking because he falls, someone said. He keeps falling and falling till he starts walking perfectly.

We were once babies but we kept falling with optimism. We can keep being optimistic as adults.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

When God told Moses to save the Israelites in the book of Exodus chapter 3, he asked who am I that I should do this? Who do I say sent me? Will they believe me? But I’m not eloquent. Who will assist me? Why did you send me? He concluded that he was unable. He criticized himself. Nobody did that for him.

I don’t know about you but I know I will keep writing. I will keep writing till my good becomes better and my better becomes best. Don’t regret in twenty years to come. Don’t criticize yourself.

This comment motivated me to write again today. I’m really grateful to the wordpress family. You can visit her blog page Here.

One year remembrance and posthumous birthday of a loved one!

On 1st March, 2020
Death’s icy hands snatched you away from us
Within a twinkle of an eye, you gave up the ghost.
Throwing us into anguish and total confusion.
But there was absolutely nothing anyone could do.

Unknown to Mr Death,
He had taken you out of the tyrannical life
Into life eternity.
The princess is in another Castle.
Where the Streets are made of gold,
Where there is no confusion,
Where there is no suffering.

The Scripture says, the memory of the righteous is a blessing,
Deep down in our hearts, you are always there.
Extending deepest sympathy to your family
And hoping for comfort and peace for your loved ones.
Goodnight, dear Amaka.
Happy birthday in Heaven, sister!

I will end this post with a quote below.

It is criminal to destroy a child’s faith in himself by telling him that he will never succeed, that he will never amount to anything, that he is a nobody, that he cannot do what others do. – Sidney Newton Bremer.

Whatever it takes!

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.

Thomas Edison.

We all hate failure. I hate failing, you do too. However, failure is just a stepping stone to success. Every successful person has once encountered failure.

Perseverance: Making efforts till the goal is achieved or the task is accomplished. In simple terms, perseverance is doing WHATEVER DECENT THING IT TAKES to succeed. Emphasis is being placed on the ‘decent’ because nowadays, most people think perseverance is doing anything to achieve a particular goal. We see people on several social media platforms, losing their shame just to chase vanity.

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb has been a motivation for so many people and is known for the saying “I didn’t fail 10,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 10,000 steps”.

One thing we should all note in life is that if we don’t chase our dreams, someone else will. You aren’t the only one dreaming. For example, we see several politicians aiming for the presidential post but just one candidate wins!

Let’s look at some biblical examples of those who persevered.

JACOB.

You can read about his perseverance in the book of Genesis 29 and 30. I will only give a summary. Jacob loved Rachel( his cousin) and wanted to get married to Rachel (This was allowed as at that time). However, he had to serve Rachel’s father; his uncle, Laban for seven years. He was deceived by his covetous uncle who could have told Jacob that he cannot marry Rachel until Leah, Rachel’s elder sister got married.

Also read, the secret to overcoming fear (And God Said!) here.

Jacob had to get married to Leah but he still had his goal in mind ( getting married to Rachel). He decided to serve for another seven years to get married to Rachel. He didn’t give up on his goal. He did WHATEVER IT TOOK HIM to get married to Rachel. Jacob worked for a total of fourteen years( seven years at first for Leah then another seven years for Rachel) before his goal was achieved.

JOB

Job was a man who feared God to the extent that God boasted about him to the devil. The bible referred him as a perfect and upright man ( perfection is attainable. Stop saying “nobody is perfect”).

Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. KJV

Job was a wealthy man. The devil argued that Job is good to God only because he is rich. God permitted the devil to tempt him to test the devil’s claim but the devil was not allowed to take his life in the process.

Before I continue, permit me to digress from the topic for discussion.

Job didn’t lose his wife because his wife was his life. The bible says in Genesis 2:24

Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. KJV

If the devil had tampered with the life of Job’s wife, he would have tampered with Job’s life at the same time.

Back to the post now, Job lost everything he owned. He lost his properties, his children, his animals, every single thing . However, he persevered even after losing everything. His friends even advised him negatively but he held on to the fear he had for God. You can study the book of Job for better understanding.

JESUS

Jesus persevered although His life on earth. He lived a sinless and blameless life. He was once human too. It wasn’t easy.  When His mates were having fun, He was preaching at the temple at an early age. He didn’t allow Himself to be tempted by the devil after fasting for forty days and nights. He was so hungry. Anyone would give up in that case but He didn’t. Thank you Sir.

Many of life’s failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up.

There is reward for perseverance. For Jacob, he got married to Rachel and was greatly blessed too. For Job, he got double portions of everything he lost. For Jesus, He is an Overcomer.
